The Arts“The arts offer tools to show evidence of understanding. If you look deeply at a student’s work in art or music or drama, you can more easily see just what they’ve learned. We help students in all grades learn how to use visual arts in powerful ways. They call on that power in their classrooms while learning about other things.”

At Nashoba Brooks, every student finds generous access to the world of the arts. The two art studios, each equipped with three sinks, generous work tables, and drying racks, share a sculpture closet and a kiln. They are laid out along the Courtyard side of Tucker, a building that is now dedicated exclusively to the arts. Music rooms are on the far side of the building, with the Gage Drama Facility in between. Even the youngest students, preschoolers, come to one of the studios in addition to working on projects in their classrooms led by teachers of the arts.
Art is the medium by which their teachers "listen" to the children. The arts integrate mind, body, and sense of self, allowing natural connections that lead to deep understanding. Whether painting or singing or taking a role onstage, students are experiencing a process from start to finish, one that includes opportunities for assessment and reflection. Work in the arts is valued as a process rather than as a means to a final product or performance. The arts are an effective way for every student to learn.
