Students Win Third Place in National Documentary Competition
Grade 8 students joined 2,300 6-12th graders from all across the country, creating short documentaries for CSPAN's StudentCam competition.
For more than five years, Nashoba Brooks School's eighth graders have been investigating current events, scheduling interviews, and producing five to six minute videos illuminating their chosen topic. Ms. Gatti, the Grade 8 social studies teacher, inherited and expanded upon her predecessor's curriculum for this engaging, national contest. This year three Nashoba Brooks students, Ava, Divi and Caroline, submitted a response called "Misinformation in the Voting System," which won a third place cash prize in the Middle School students division.
Ms. Gatti's unit starts with an introduction to government and its operations, and as her students discuss different aspects, they eventually agree on a focus area. This year's theme for StudentCam was "Explore the issue you most want the president and new Congress to address in 2021," and Ms. Gatti's class decided to discover who is left out of the voting process and what that means for legislation. She explains how she urges students to think critically: "I respond, during their discussion, with counter arguments to encourage them to really prove to me why their topic is important." Students are then broken into groups, answering different parts of the question. Ms. Gatti was impressed by all the final videos: "The Grade 8 students showed incredible strength, collaboration, and dedication. I am so proud of their work!"
