Digging into Identity

Employees spent much of last week’s professional development day discussing identity—both personal and communal.
The day started with discussing and practicing language they can use with students to create a more positive and productive school environment. They also invested some time to consider Nashoba Brooks’ identity as a community, reflecting on the things that matter most, and discussing how we can continue to highlight and enhance the things our community does best. The afternoon featured gender specialist Rebecca Minor, whose presentation “Getting Comfortable with Gender” explored the shifting definitions and more expansive methods for expressing gender identity and sexuality. Her talk explored ways that educators can use more gender neutral language, diversify historical role models, and better support students to be themselves. It was a beneficial and thought provoking end to a day dedicated to enhancing the welcoming and inclusive nature of our School.
