C-SPAN Second Prize Winners

Grade 8 Students Earn C-SPAN Recognition

On Friday, June 2, Massachusetts State Representatives Kay Kahn and Cory Atkins joined with representatives from C-SPAN and Comcast in celebrating Nashoba Brooks' six winning teams in the 2017 Middle School C-SPAN StudentCam documentary competition.

All of our teams were made up of Grade 8 girls: four won Honorable Mention, one was chosen for a third place prize, and one earned second place prize. The winning documentaries looked at the themes of "Gauging the Wage Gap," "The Great Gun Debate," "An Aversion to Conversion?," "The Death Penalty: Is Our Criminal Justice System Flawed?," "Crossing the Border, Reaching the Light," and "LGBTQ+ Rights in School."

This year, C-SPAN received nearly 3,000 entries from students in 46 states, Washington DC, England, Germany, Singapore and Taiwan. From these entries, C-SPAN recognized 150 documentaries with awards. We are delighted that Nashoba Brooks represented six of these documentaries. Grades 7 and 8 social studies teacher, Lauren Funk, has been the C-SPAN project advisor at Nashoba Brooks for the past few years.

Each of the girls received a certificate from C-SPAN and certificates of congratulations from US Senator Elizabeth Warren, Governor Charlie Baker, Representative Robert DeLeo, and Representative Cory Atkins from the Massachusetts House of Representatives. The second place prize also came with a check for $1,500.

Congratulations to all the girls for their fine work in the C-SPAN StudentCam competition this year!
