Lower School

The image shows three children, two girls and one boy, in what appears to be an art classroom or studio. The children are engaged in various creative activities, with the boy holding a drawing or artwork in his hands.

Our Lower School is full of joy and discovery. Our students are adventurous learners and engaged members of the School community. In Lower School, students expand their perspective by transitioning from a focus on their individual needs to thinking about the group and the world around them. This is a rewarding period for students as they develop knowledge, skills, and strategies that help them solve problems independently and collaboratively. We know that to thrive children need the freedom to explore ideas, to ask questions, and to take risks. We provide those opportunities and much more. Our classrooms provide an atmosphere in which creative thinking and joyful learning flourish.

Preschool and Transitional Kindergarten

Preschool and Transitional Kindergarten (TK) provide a strong foundation for developing cooperative skills and  the joy of exploration as children’s first school experiences.

Kindergarten and Grade 1

Kindergarten and Grade 1 students love to learn, play, sing, explore, create and laugh, which serves as a bridge from the strong foundations developed in Preschool and/or Transitional Kindergarten to building their confidence and independence as leaders in the upper grades of Lower School.

Grades 2 and 3

Grade 2 and 3 students utilize their deepened academic and interpersonal skills to speak with greater competence about their learning and to support their community.

What Sets Our Lower School Apart?

Immersive learning

Immersive nature and place-based learning

"My child has been enriched by the opportunities to extend his learning beyond the classroom, from pond dipping in preschool to learning about local abolitionists at the Concord Museum in Grade 2; from applying their Grade 1 economics knowledge at a bank in town to hiking the Trail Through Time in conjunction with his Grade 3 Native People’s unit. He has regularly been challenged to see his learning in the real world."
