Grade 3 Meets Author Christine Day

Recently, Ms. Gaffny and Ms. Keady's Grade 3 students had the exciting opportunity to meet Christine Day, the author of I Can Make This Promise.
Having just finished the book, students were eager to talk to the creator of a tale about an adopted girl searching for her Native American identity. As a citizen of the Upper Skagit tribe, Ms. Day explained that "my story is inspired by my family's history," which makes it a wonderful addition to the third grade's interdisciplinary study of Native Peoples in America. Students prepared questions and listened to Ms. Day's responses. They wondered predominantly about being a full-time writer. At the end of the gathering, Ms. Day left Grade 3 students with some sage advice: read a lot and read widely, even if you're not sure you'll like it. Students left that day still chatting excitedly about "how cool" it was to hear the advice of a real author.
